Four-time Olympic gold medalist Simone Biles will return to the International Gymnastics Federation world championships later this month in Doha, Qatar, as a member of the USA Gymnastics team selected Friday in Sarasota, Fla.
Biles, 21, of Spring will be joined on the traveling squad by 2017 world champion Morgan Hurd of Middletown, Del.; Kara Eaker of Grain Valley, Mo.; Grace McCallum of Isanti, Minn.; Riley McCusker of Brielle, N.J.; and Ragan Smith of Lewisville.
Five of the six will compete, and one will be designated as the alternate.
Biles, who resumed training last fall after a year’s absence from the sport following the 2016 Olympics, had the top score of 59.7 points at the selection camp, leading McCusker at 57.25. That included a score of 16.0, with a 9.6 execution score on a 10-point scale, on a new vault that, if she performs it at worlds, would be named in her honor as the first woman to complete successfully the skill at a world championships.
The new vault adds a half-twist, with a blind forward landing, to the vault named for Chinese champion Cheng Fei that Biles performed at the Olympics. The new vault, which features a 720-degree rotation in a straight body position, has never been performed successfully by a woman in competition.
Meanwhile, USA Gymnastics on Friday named former congresswoman Mary Bono as its interim president and chief operating officer. Bono will fill the post while a selection committee seeks a successor to Kerry Perry, who resigned under pressure earlier this year as USA Gymnastics continues to reorganize in the wake of the Larry Nassar sexual abuse scandal.
