Chelsea captain Cesar Azpilicueta has sent a good luck message to Jose Mourinho following his appointment as manager of Tottenham.
Spurs announced that Mauricio Pochettino had been relieved of his duties on Tuesday evening and Mourinho was announced as the Argentine’s successor the following morning.
Mourinho previously stated that he could never manage the north London club out of respect for Chelsea, where he won eight pieces of silverware across two spells.
Azpilicueta, who was a trusted member of Mourinho’s squad which won the Premier League title in 2014/15, has passed on his best wishes to the Portuguese.
‘I can talk only about when Jose was here at Chelsea with us,’ the Spanish defender told Sky Sports.

‘We won trophies and now football moves on, every time it’s different.
‘I can wish him all the best even if he goes to our rival. We have good memories with him and I played many times against him.
‘Obviously when we play against each other we both want to win for our teams but this is football.’

Chelsea legend Ashley Cole admits he was ‘shocked’ by the appointment but has no doubts that Mourinho was succeed in his new position.
‘I’m a little bit shocked to be honest. Obviously he was a Chelsea man and then went to Man United, and now he’s back,’ the former left-back told talkSPORT.
‘I appreciate the work he did at Chelsea and what he tried to do at Man United, and this is going to be a tough test for him. It is something different for him But I think he will do well; he is a great coach and a great manager.
‘When people talk about that sort of stuff [being a Chelsea man], when they talk about rivalry, at the end of the day he wants a job and wants to get back into work. It’s a great job for him to take.

‘I don’t see why not [he can’t win trophies. Whether it is going to come sooner rather than later is the question people will ask.
‘With his qualities and experience – he knows how to win – it’s going to be interesting to see how that develops.’

Mourinho has vowed to bring ‘passion’ and ‘happiness’ back to Spurs after a dismal start to the season under his predecessor Pochettino.
‘I couldn’t be happier and look forward to the challenge,’ he said.
‘What can I promise? Passion, real passion.
‘Passion for my job, but also passion for my club, that’s the way I have been all my career and I want to try, obviously, everything to bring happiness to everyone who loves the club.’
He added: ‘Even as an opponent, there was always huge respect between me and the club.
‘I met you in cup finals, in semi-finals, in big matches and to keep that respect was probably in the back of my mind that one day I could be one of you.
‘It’s a privilege when a manager goes to a club and feels that happiness in relation to the squad he is going to have.
‘It didn’t happen many times. To be honest, the majority of the times we go to clubs and we always think “we like some, I don’t like enough” and you think immediately about what to do to change, what to do to make an approach between your ideas and the profile of the players.
