SUNRISE, Fla. — The Ducks didn’t need brass knuckles when they hit the ice Thursday at BB&T Center.

They didn’t need a towel either.

Sticks and skates and the rest of their gear sufficed.

Funny what happens when teams stick to hockey.

The Ducks’ 5-4 overtime loss to the Florida Panthers barely resembled the bare-knuckled brawl that was their loss to the Washington Capitals on Monday. The Ducks excelled initially because the Panthers allowed them to skate where they wanted and create plays when they needed to make them.

The Capitals were far more physical and menacing, and not always in a good way.

Happily, there was no repeat of the spitting incident that cost Washington’s Garnet Hathaway a well-deserved three-game suspension from the NHL. There were no fights, period. Thursday’s game was played at an eye-pleasing pace that suited the Ducks just fine for the better part of two periods.

Max Jones, Nick Ritchie, Rickard Rakell (power play) and Ondrej Kase scored to stake goaltender John Gibson to a 4-0 lead by the closing moments of the second period. Rakell’s goal was the Ducks’ second man-advantage goal in as many games after Sam Steel scored Monday.

The Ducks couldn’t hold onto their lead, however. Florida’s Brett Connolly scored twice in the closing minutes of the second period to cut it to 4-2, and then Aaron Ekblad and Dominic Toninato scored in the third to rally the Panthers from a four-goal deficit to force the game to OT.

Ekblad then won it 22 seconds into OT.

Much more to come on this story.
