Double basketball gold caps Philippines' record-breaking SEA Games - ABS-CBN News

The twin gold medals by the national basketball teams late on the last day of these Southeast Asian Games summed up the Philippines' more than weeklong campaign — some were familiar, even pre-ordained; others seemed to come out of nowhere.

The 30th edition of the regional multi-sports meet ended competition on Tuesday, enduring a bumpy start and a typhoon before producing a record haul of medals en route to the overall championship.

As of 9:58 p.m., the SEA Games official website showed the Philippines with 148 gold medals and 382 overall, far and away the country's most productive showing since joining the Games in 1977.

That tally didn't account yet for Gilas Pilipinas' victory in men's basketball, which came after the women's victory.

The women bagged their first SEA Games title while the men, as expected, steamrolled to their 18th championship.

In men's volleyball, even though they fell shy of gold, it was still a massive success for the hosts, who were in their first final since 1977. They lost to Indonesia to earn the silver.

Jiu-jitsu and track-and-field added to the Philippines' total on a day that saw fewer events compared to earlier in the tournament.
