
Jimmy Howard yielded a goal directly in front of the net at the 7:35 mark of the third period Friday as the Grand Rapids Griffins lost on the road to Iowa, 4-2.
Howard, making his second conditioning start with the AHL team as he rehabs from a groin injury Nov. 27, was beaten by Gerald Mayhew who took a nice feed along the boards from Kyle Rau, to break a 2-2 tie.
Mayhew stole the puck at center ice and added an empty netter in the final seconds.
Howard's first game with the Griffins was Tuesday in San Diego as he stopped 30 of 32 shots and thwarted all three attempts in a shootout to give the Griffins a 3-2 victory.
Howard practiced with the Griffins Thursday and traveled with the team to Des Moines, He expected to return to the Red Wings on Saturday and start in Sunday's game against the Arizona Coyotes.
"Over the years when you have injuries you learn what's best to come back," Howard said on Griffins Game Day that posted Friday. "Getting down here to play with the farm team is a good way for me."
Against Iowa, Howard yield goals late in the first and early in the second. He faced 29 shots.
The Griffins, after an early power play goal from Eric Tangradi, tied it at 2-2 with 3:32 left in the second on Matthew Ford’s goal.
This was Howard first conditioning assignment with the Griffins since March 7, 2017, when he posted 21 saves in a 3-0 win at San Antonio.
He began his professional career in Grand Rapids and played for the Griffins from 2005-09.
