President Donald Trump is spending most of his “impeachment day” sending out tweets against Democratic lawmakers, including Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, deriding them for voting to place the heaviest punishment on him that Congress can dish out to the chief executive.

So far, he’s at about 45 tweets for the day, as of press time.
Yet, it wasn’t that long ago that Trump himself was a proponent of impeachment. Then as a businessman, occasionally thinking about running for president from time-to-time, Trump called for a different president to be impeached — and not for breaking any crime, as he (wrongly) insists is required.
Speaking to CNN’s Wolf Blitzer in 2008, Trump took Pelosi to task, not for pursuing impeachment articles against then-President George W. Bush, but rather because she didn’t do so, the Washington Post reported in an article from 2016.
“I was surprised that she didn’t do more in terms of Bush and going after Bush,” Trump said. “It just seemed like she was really going to look to impeach Bush and get him out of office. Which personally I think would have been a wonderful thing.”
When Blitzer asked if Trump meant impeachment, he responded in the affirmative.
“For the war! Well, he lied! He got us into the war with lies!” Trump said.

Trump compared Bush’s actions to former President Bill Clinton’s, arguing that impeachment would be more justified for the Republican president than they were for the Democratic one. He also called the impeachment of Clinton “nonsense.”
Trump made it seem that he wanted impeachment to happen for Bush because, as he put it, Bush said Iraq “had WMDs, by saying all sorts of things that happened not to be true.”
Lying to the American people is not generally considered an impeachable offense — which is a fortunate thing for Trump, all things considered.
Pelosi made it clear from the get-go that she was not interested in impeaching Bush. “I have said it before and I will say it again: Impeachment is off the table,” she said in November 2006, after Democrats won control of Congress with two years remaining in Bush’s second term.
