Getting dressed for an evening at Artis—Naples may require a tape measure after bag size restrictions begin Saturday, Feb. 1.
To boost security, Collier County's major performance and art venue will limit the size and style of bags that enter any interior space at its 5833 Pelican Bay Blvd. campus. That includes Hayes Hall, The Baker Museum, the Daniels Pavilion and the Toni Stabile Building (Lifelong Learning classes).
Here are the new regulations::
- Bag or purse sizes must have dimensions that total no more than 24 inches. That is, if you have a bag that is 9 inches high by 12 inches long, its front-to-back width may be no more than 3 inches. An 8- by 10-inch bag would allow a 6-inch front to back width.
- Backpacks, beach bags and suitcases are no longer allowed.
The practice has been coming, with stars like Jackson Browne and the musical "Hamilton" insisting on enhanced security for their appearance at Artis—Naples.
"We have been looking at our security features. We actually had a security consultant come in. I think the thing that really got us moving on it was the 'Hamilton' experience," said David Filner, vice-president of artistic operations for Artis—Naples. "We got, for the most part, very good feedback from our patrons, who appreciated the added security."
Ushers will not be waiting at entrances with yardsticks, he emphasized.
"We have had our ushers looking at various versions of it," he said of the size parmeters. "This is an approximate number we're looking at."
"We're not going to have a size-wise things like at the airport," he continued. "We basically looked at various size bags and tried to find a middle ground — something that's a reasonable size for someone to be carrying their basic things in, but not so big that they can carry more dangerous items."
Security personnel won't be looking in bags at entrances, either. But that's on the table.
"At this point we’re not looking at specific bag searches. But that's something we're looking at going forward," Filner said.
Artis—Naples is the last of the "Big Three" indoor entertainment venues in Southwest Florida to initiate restrictions.
The Barbara B. Mann Performing Arts Hall in Fort Myers has limited purses and bags to a linear size of 12 by 12 by 6 inches since October 2018.
Hertz Arena in Estero began limiting bags for size or transparency in January 2019. Theirs is the most restrictive, with bags or purses required to be no larger than 6½ by 4½ inches, about the size of an outstretched hand.
It allows larger clear plastic (no tint or design) tote bags clear freezer bags up to a linear size of of bigger than 12 by 12 by 6 inches). Hertz Arena is the only one of those three that requires entry through a metal detector.
