Bruins blow three-goal lead, fall to Flyers in shootout - 98.5 The Sports Hub

A three-goal lead in the second period of a Monday head-to-head with the Flyers wasn't enough for the Bruins, as Jaroslav Halak and Co. surrendered three unanswered goals before posting an 0-for-5 in the shootout in a 6-5 loss at the Wells Fargo Center.

It was about as bad a collapse as the Bruins have experienced this season (and that's something), and spoiled what was an otherwise stellar effort from the club's secondary scoring for the second time in a week's time.

"I don’t think [the Flyers] did a whole lot different they just funneled some pucks through the net and we didn’t keep it out of our net," said Bruins head coach Bruce Cassidy. "Talk about the goaltending, talk about our D in front of them, yeah I think they can both take their share of the blame of some of those goals there."

With the Bruins up 5-2 in the second period, the Boston edge was cut to two on a Sean Couturier finish on Halak, and a pinball goal off a Connor Bunnaman shot made it a one-goal game through 40 minutes of action.

But the goal that really seemed to irk Cassidy was the game-tying strike, which saw the Flyers outnumber the Bruins three to nothing in front of Halak, and with nobody there to deny Travis Sanheim his second goal of the night.

"We got three different guys circling out of there, it’s inexcusable," said Cassidy. "You’re in the third period you have a lead that’s gotten away from you we’re pretty good at buckling down, and I don’t know what to tell you on that particular play. No compete in front of the net, no urgency to keep the puck out of the net from three of our players. Not sure if the goalie could’ve covered it to be honest with you. It’s a couple like that around the front of the net but clearly not a good enough job, so good for Philly for going to the net and sticking around getting inside.

"That’s what they did at the end and we weren’t able to move them out of there and had no will to move them out of there."

And the shootout brought about more of the same for the Black and Gold, as the Bruins failed to score a single shootout tally on Carter Hart, and with Brad Marchand straight-up whiffing on the start of his shootout attempt to seal the deal on Boston's seventh shootout loss in as many tries this season.

The Bruins won't have to wait long to try and waste the sour taste of this loss out of their mouths, as they will skate against the Blue Jackets on Tuesday night.
