Here’s the story as explained by those involved. On the morning of Dec. 23, the team was bussing to T.D. Garden in Boston for the morning skate. Ovechkin, sitting up front with the staffers, was chatting with vice president of communications Sergey Kocharov when the conversation turned to No. 8’s goal drought at home. To that point, Ovechkin had scored just six of 22 goals on home ice.
