ARLINGTON, Va. – A year ago, player-specific goal songs didn’t exist.

Now they’re a staple at Capital One Arena.

In fact, every player on the Capitals’ roster has either chosen a goal song or been assigned one. Fans sing along to them. And at least one player has switched (though he tells The Athletic that he’s considering changing it back).

The player in question? Alex Ovechkin.

Wait, what?

Here’s the story as explained by those involved. On the morning of Dec. 23, the team was bussing to T.D. Garden in Boston for the morning skate. Ovechkin, sitting up front with the staffers, was chatting with vice president of communications Sergey Kocharov when the conversation turned to No. 8’s goal drought at home. To that point, Ovechkin had scored just six of 22 goals on home ice.
