Cincinnati Children's Adds Mobile Heart Care Unit - Spectrum News 1

CINCINNATI, Ohio — One of the state’s most well-known children’s hospitals is doing something they believe no other children’s hospital in the country has done before.

Cincinnati Children's Hospital has launched a new mobile care unit for heart patients.

The purpose of this new mobile care unit is to bring cardiac health care to children that might not be able to get it otherwise.

• Doctors at Cincinnati Children’s believe this is the first bus for children’s heart care in the country
• The bus has two exam rooms, portable EKG and ECHO equipment, a wheelchair lift and a kiosk for easy check-in
• The hospital encourages appointments for the medical care unit

What’s different about this bus is that it’s not just for any patient. It’s for any child that may need to see a cardiologist, but might live a little too far to get there.

“It provides the same level of care as if that family had come into Cincinnati to our outpatient clinic," said Dr. Andrew Redington, the head of cardiology at Cincinnati Children's. "It really does do as much as we can do at base, but just much closer to home."

So far, the mobile care unit has hosted three clinics in the Seaman, Ohio area —an area that is sometimes too far for parents to be able to bring their child to see a specialist in Cincinnati.

“If we can see parents and patients in their own environment, unstressed, without having traveled two or three hours, it’s a better way of us being able to provide care," said Redington.

The bus is complete with two exam rooms, portable EKG and ECHO equipment, a wheelchair lift and more.

Doctors and nurses also praise the efficiency of the mobile care unit.

“Everything about the mobile clinic is a little bit more streamlined and efficient for everybody —doctors, nurses and the patients and families," Redington said.

For these doctors, they know how crucial it is to have quality care —especially when an illness involves the heart.

“It’s difficult enough to have an ill child," said Redington. "It’s even more difficult if that illness revolves around the heart.”

While the mobile care unit just rolled out for the first time in November, the hope is to continue to grow the hospital’s mobile care to more places in order to help more children.

“I think this bus will rapidly become several buses," Redington said. "And it won’t just be a heart bus, it will be a children’s care bus, providing all levels of sub-specialty care across the tri-state area.”

Cincinnati Children’s Hospital is encouraging appointments for the medical care unit.  Appointments are made by provider referrals.
