
The Critics’ Choice Awards, hosted by Taye Diggs, were handed out on Sunday night and Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon A Time… In Hollywood took the award for Best Picture and on the TV side, Fleabag nabbed the trophy for Best Comedy Series while Succession went home with Best Drama.
A big shocker of the evening was . 1917’s Sam Mendes and Parasite’s Bong Joon Ho won for Best Director. Bong also earned the prize for Best Foreign Language Film while 1917 earned accolades for Best Cinematography and Best Editing.
A big winner of the night was Netflix, which racked up nine wins with The Irishman winning Best Ensemble and recent Golden Globe winner Laura Dern talking a trophy for Marriage Story while Dolemite Is My Name won for Best Comedy. On the episodic side, When They See Us won to a standing ovation for for Best Limited Series after being shut out at the Golden Globes. Star of the limited series Jharrel Jerome added a Critics Choice award for his tropy case for his turn as Korey Wise from the Exonerated Five. Bojack Horseman won for Best Animated Series and Toni Collette took home the award for her role in the drama Unbelievable.
HBO was also a big winner this evening with Jeremy Strong winning for Succession and Bill Hader taking home the award for Barry. Regina King and Jean Smart both won Critics’ Choice Awards for their roles in Damon Lindelof’s critically-acclaimed Watchmen while Stellan Skarsgård won for his role Chernobyl.
Other acting awards on the film side included Joaquin Phoenix for Joker, Renée Zellweger for Judy and Brad Pitt for Best Supporting Actor for Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood to add to the film’s trophy tally. Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time and Greta Gerwig’s Little Women won for Best Original Screenplay and Best Adapted Screenplay respectively.
