Weekend: Tony award-winning actress comes to UF - The Courier

Tony award-winning actress Beth Leavel will hold a concert at the University of Findlay’s Winebrenner Theological Seminary Sunday, Jan. 26, at 7:30 p.m. The Donnell Broadway Concert Series guest artist for the month of January, Leavel has appeared in 13 Broadway musicals over her career. She will be accompanied on piano by award-winning Broadway musician Phil Reno.

Tickets for the performance cost $30 for adults, $27 for seniors and $10 for non-university students. Admission can be purchased through the Marathon Center for the Performing Arts box office, 200 W. Main Cross St., in person from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, online at mcpa.org or by calling 419-423-2787 during box office hours. Tickets are free for university students, faculty and staff with valid university ID.

A native of Raleigh, North Carolina, Leavel graduated from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro with a M.F.A. in acting and directing. She made her Broadway debut in 1983 as a replacement in a production of “42nd Street.” She then starred in the 1994 Hal Prince revival of “Show Boat.”

Her breakthrough role was the titular character in the original production of “The Drowsy Chaperone” in 2006, for which she received critical acclaim. Her performance won her the Tony award for Best Featured Actress in a Musical and the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Featured Actress in a Musical.

Leavel’s Broadway career has also included playing Frau Blucher in the Broadway production of “Young Frankenstein” and Donna Sheridan in the Broadway production of “Mamma Mia!” Her most recent show was “The Prom,” in which she originated the role of Dee Dee Allen. Her next Broadway performance will be the role of Miranda Priestly in the musical “The Devil Wears Prada,” scheduled to preview in Chicago beginning in 2021.

Reno, originally from Tiffin, is the musical director and vocal arranger for the Tony Award-nominated 2015 musical comedy “Something Rotten!” He has received three Grammy Award nominations for work on cast recordings, and he has also worked on productions of “The Producers” and “Cats,” among others.
