The UKs emphasis on herd immunity (March 14) to protect the population from infection ignores the issue of virus mutation. The influenza pandemic of 1917-18 had high mortality which decreased exponentially because of genetic changes to the virus since 1918. This is why the strains included in the annual flu vaccination are reviewed each season. Coronavirus will not be genetically stable over the next few years as mutational change decreases its toxicity. As with flu, previous infection may not protect against new strains. While we await its evolution, isolation remains the best policy.
