5 Things to Know Before You Sign Up for T-Mobile Connect - Clark.com - Clark Howard

If you want to lower your cell phone bill to about $15 a month, T-Mobile Connect is a new option to consider in 2020.

Two new prepaid plans launched just days before T-Mobile’s merger with Sprint was finalized and amid the coronavirus pandemic that’s disrupted the U.S. economy.

But is switching to T-Mobile Connect worth the savings? Here are five things to know before you sign up!

1. Network Coverage

T-Mobile Connect utilizes T-Mobile’s 4G LTE nationwide network and also provides access to 5G in places where it’s available. To confirm coverage, map your address and other places that you frequent on T-Mobile’s website.

These prepaid plans offer domestic coverage only, so international roaming, calling and texting aren’t available.

2. Plans and Pricing

The price is right for T-Mobile Connect. Its cheapest plan is $15 a month (plus taxes and fees). That could force other low-cost cell phone providers to cut prices to remain competitive.

Here are the two plans offered for very light data users:

• Unlimited talk, text and 2GB of high-speed data for $15/month plus taxes and fees
• Unlimited talk, text and 5GB of high-speed data for $25/month plus taxes and fees

With these plans, data is capped at either 2GB or 5GB. You can purchase a data pass if you go over your limit.

Something unique about T-Mobile Connect is its Annual Data Upgrade feature. Customers will get an additional 500MB of monthly data every year for the next five years — no extra cost.

3. Additional Features

These new prepaid plans don’t offer some of the perks that T-Mobile is known for. For example, the T-Mobile Tuesdays and Netflix on Us promotions aren’t available to T-Mobile Connect subscribers.

According to T-Mobile’s website, tethering is allowed up to the data limit, and video typically streams at DVD-quality of 480p.

4. Phone Selection

If you sign up for T-Mobile Connect, you can choose to bring a compatible device or buy a new one. However, T-Mobile Connect can’t be combined with special device offers.

Nearly 40 devices were available for sale when I checked, including phones from Apple, Samsung, LG and more.

Many of the phones for sale through T-Mobile were expensive. If you’re on a budget, you might be better off purchasing a compatible device elsewhere and bringing it to T-Mobile.

Use this tool on T-Mobile’s website to see if your phone is compatible.

5. Customer Service

Those who sign up for T-Mobile Connect can get customer support the same way as other T-Mobile customers. T-Mobile Care is available by calling 1-800-937-8997.

To sign up for one of the new plans, you can call that number, go to prepaid.t-mobile.com or visit a T-Mobile store.

Final Thought 

T-Mobile Connect offers two simple smartphone plans for people who want unlimited talk and text, but don’t require unlimited data.

The $15 per month plan is among the cheapest around, but the $25 plan has more competition. Some prepaid carriers offer unlimited data at that price point if you’re part of a family or group plan.
