'Hero' logger is recovering at home | News - Monroe County Reporter

Artis Barnes, an independent logger who was severely injured in an accident in Monroe County on Jan. 16 when he swerved to avoid a vehicle that turned in front of him at the intersection of Hwys. 18 and 41, near the old Monroe Academy, is slowly recovering. He was glad to accept a check from community donations organized by an anonymous Forsyth resident with the Society of American Foresters on April 3.

Dorothy, who quit her job to care for Artis, said there are some things he needs and everything helps. Artis is presently confined to bed. It was recommended that he go to Shepherd Center in Atlanta or Warm Springs for rehabilitation, but he hasn’t been able to do so. Dorothy said a therapist has been coming to work with Artis at home. He said he is really tired of being confined to bed.

An anonymous individual who works in the forest industry set up an account to collect donations for the Barnes family, calling Artis a hero because he sacrificed his own health and his logging truck to avoid crashing into the smaller vehicle, a 2019 Ford Edge. Artis, 66, was extricated from his truck by Monroe County EMS and taken to Navicent Health. He is now at his home in the High Falls area.
