Denver police arrested 54 people during Monday protests in downtown Denver with most of the citations coming from curfew violations.
Thousands of people took to the streets for the fifth day to protest the death of George Floyd, who died after a Minneapolis police officer knelt on his neck for almost nine minutes. They scoffed at Mayor Michael Hancock’s decision to impose a 9 p.m. curfew on the city and to extend it through Friday evening. Several hundred people stayed on the streets until nearly midnight when police officers deployed tear gas to disperse them.
Six of the 54 arrested were cited for crimes other than a curfew violation; those crimes included public fighting, carrying a concealed weapon and curfew violation. Three arrested were juveniles.
Monday’s arrests bring the total number over five days to 338 arrests. Other day’s numbers are:
- Thursday — 13
- Friday — 18
- Saturday — 83
- Sunday — 170
