Mobile County opens parks today, including new one - AL.com

Mobile County is reopening parks today, including Chickasabogue and its newly acquired Escatawpa Hollow property. The city of Mobile also has new park guidelines taking effect today.

On the county side, Chickasabogue Park and River Delta Marina and Campground were set to open June 1, ending a shutdown due to the COVID-19 epidemic. The park will be open seven days a week with camping limited to 50% capacity, by reservation only, to allow adequate spacing.

Pavilions, picnic tables, boat launches, fishing piers, hiking and biking trails, and disc golf fields are open for use at Chickasabogue. Canoe and kayak rentals are not open, but patrons may bring their own. Playground areas and exercise equipment, as well as the swimming pool at River Delta Marina, remain closed. For reservations or information call 251-574-2267 for the park, 251-574-2266 for the marina.

Escatawpa Hollow Park, located where U.S. 98 crosses the Escatawpa River at the Mississippi state line, is opening for the first time as a public park. Previously a privately owned campground, it was acquired by the county in early 2019. Its “Phase I” opening allows access to beach and picnic areas including renovated restrooms, pavilions, picnic tables and grills. Construction work will begin this summer on further amenities, according to information released by the county.

Escatawpa Hollow Park will be open from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., seven days a week. The park is at 15551 Moffett Road in Wilmer. For reservations or information call 251-574-2267.

Additionally, West Mobile County Park will open Tuesday, June 1, for team sport practices only. For reservations or information, call 251-574-7275.

The city of Mobile has announced that its athletic fields will open Monday, June 1 for skills and conditioning exercises only for all sports. Reservations for parks and pavilions will be open on a limited basis.

On June 15 city parks will be open for youth and teen camps with limited class sizes and activities. Youth fall baseball and softball leagues can begin play.

Continued closures include all city pools, splash pads and wading pools which will be closed for the entire 2020 season. Other features still closed include recreation center reservations, senior centers, therapeutic services, baskeball courts and organized soccer, football and lacrosse games.

All participants in organized activities at parks must be screened and must practice social distancing and hygienic measures. A full listing of current park policies and procedures can be found at www.cityofmobile.org/residents/parks-and-recreation/.
