N.J.’s Peggy Pope, ‘attagirl’ actress from ‘9 to 5,’ dead at 91 - nj.com

Peggy Pope, an actress known for delivering the catchword “attagirl!” in the movie “9 to 5,” has died, Variety reports. She was 91.

Pope played a secretary named Margaret in the 1980 classic opposite Dolly Parton, Lily Tomlin and Jane Fonda. “Attagirl” was her way of encouraging co-workers in an office where three women come together to strike back against their sexist boss.

The actress, born in Montclair, died May 27 in Fort Collins, Colorado, according to an announcement from her family.

Pope followed up “9 to 5” by joining the cast of an ABC series based on the film.

“Violet, where are you going?” Margaret asks Lily Tomlin’s character in the movie.

“I’m gonna get drunk,” Violet replies.

“Attagirl," Margaret says. She has the same response when Dolly Parton’s character, Doralee, decides to go get a drink and take the rest of the day off.

She used the word for her autobiography, “Atta Girl: Tales From a Life in the Trenches of Show Business.”

“It was a good movie and a good part,” Pope wrote in her book. “At the end, my character comes back from rehab, hair combed, looking spiffy and ready for the sequel. Underdogs climbing to the top is a fine formula, and it’s always good to be in at the end of a film so people remember you were in it."

Pope, born Florence Margaret Pope, had a 50-year career in entertainment. She appeared on Broadway in 1959 with Wally Cox in “Moonbirds," won an Obie Award in 1968 for “Muzeeka” and went on to star with Jimmy Stewart in a 1970 production of “Harvey."

Her other film roles included the 1984 movie “The Last Starfighter," the 1996 film “The Substitute" and the 2008 movie “Choke.”

Her TV roles ranged from appearances on “Bewitched,” “Soap" and “Barnaby Jones“ to “Hill Street Blues,” “Rhoda,” “The Golden Girls,” “Billy,” “ER,” “St. Elsewhere” and “Night Court.”
