The autopsy report for Christian Artis has been released to the media. Artis, 24, of Walnut Cove, was shot on Feb. 4 during an argument.
The report shows a single gunshot wound to the upper left side of the chest. The bullet passed through the heart, lung and aorta, was recovered in the body and passed on to law enforcement.
The pathologist also found bruises on Artis’s arms, hand, and shin.
According to the Stokes County Medical Examiner’s report, the victim was involved in a dispute in the kitchen of a house on K-Fork Road, resulting in an altercation and shooting. After attempts by first responders to resuscitate him with CPR, Artis was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Sheriff’s Department’s investigation led to the quick arrest of Matthew James Murray, age 30, of Mayodan.
Artis was a former standout athlete at South Stokes High School, on the football and wrestling teams. He lived in the Walnut Tree neighborhood and was employed by McGee and Sons Construction.
The autopsy was performed at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem by Dr. N.S. Shaller. The Stokes County Medical Examiner is Scott Aaron.
