Viral video of Central Park 'Karen' Amy Cooper spawns #BlackBirdersWeek - New York Post

One good thing has come out of the Central Park Karen fiasco: the birth of #BlackBirdersWeek last week.

The movement came after Amy Cooper, aka Central Park Karen, called the police on Christian Cooper, a black man who was birding in the Ramble after he asked her to leash her dog.

“Black Birders Week is a series of online events to celebrate Black scientists, scholars, and naturalists and to increase the visibility of Black birders, who face unique challenges and dangers when engaging in outdoor activities,” according to the group’s Wikipedia page.

“The importance is normalizing the fact that Black people exist in the birding and natural sciences community,” Anna Gifty Opoku-Agyeman, one of the organizers of the event told CNN. “People don’t understand that Black people exist in other contexts other than the ones they’re exposed to. It’s to ensure other people see the impact of Black birders and naturalists, and gives them a chance to be seen.”

Opoku-Agyeman also told The Verge, “A lot of times when you think about black people in nature, a lot of people associate that with a threat — that black people can’t exist in nature without being threatened. So this idea that black people are thriving in nature — they are embracing nature, they are incredibly joyful and excited about showcasing the natural world to the rest of us – is a perspective that we desperately need.”

During the week, people posted photos of their favorite birds, favorite outdoor places and asked questions of experienced birders.
