EDGEWOOD, Ky. (WKRC) – Heart and vascular experts at St. Elizabeth Healthcare say a new study in the European Heart Journal reminds us that COVID-19 can have symptoms that may be similar to those of heart problems.

Researchers are still trying to discover how coronavirus can damage the heart and how common it is to have heart problems from it. In this study, ultrasound scans of more than 1,200 hospital patients in 69 countries were reviewed.

More than half appeared to have heart damage. Fifty-five percent had abnormal changes to the way the heart pumps the blood. One in seven patients had damage considered to be severe. There was also stroke and heart attack risk.

One other trend the St. Elizabeth heart and vascular team revealed is that people often think they have a virus or something else when they have breathing problems, swelling in the legs or ankles, heart palpitations and even chest pain.

These are classic symptoms of heart problems that can be related to many things, including valve problems which can lead to heart failure.

“We have several teams that will evaluate patients, particularly with for valvular heart disease,” said Dr. Kevin Fitzgerald, a cardiologist at St. Elizabeth Healthcare. “If we think somebody needs a potential valve replacement, they are evaluated by a structural heart team, which consists of cardiologists and a surgical team made of cardiothoracic surgeons. “Together as a team, we come up with the best approach for the patient and the best outcomes based on how healthy they are, what the risk for surgery is versus a non-surgical approach. I think it's important to have input from all sides.”

“The technology has really improved maybe over the last number of years, five to eight years, particularly with the aortic valve,” said Dr. Victor Schmelzer, a cardiothoracic surgeon at St. Elizabeth Healthcare. “Today we are able to replace the aortic valve for many people using the arteries in the groin area, and without having to open the chest, which is a much less dramatic procedure for patients. It allows them to get out of the hospital much more quickly and recover much more quickly without having a long recuperative process.”

Whether you have treatment for the coronavirus and even other viruses, there may be future guidelines that recommend a heart scan following diagnosis to discover if there’s heart damage. As always, if you have questions about your own heart, click here to find a cardiologist.
