More than 100,000 Americans have volunteered for clinical trials for a COVID-19 vaccine.
About 138,600 people signed up in the two weeks since efforts to recruit volunteers began. The volunteers will participate in tests for four potential vaccines at sites across the country, including locations in Alabama.
Most volunteers will be required to visit a research site at least 10 times over the next two years where they will be injected with either a potential vaccine or a placebo, Forbes reported. Volunteers won’t be infected with the virus but instead will be given a vaccine to see if it prevents them from being infected.
There are currently 26 COVID-19 vaccines currently being tested on humans.

Trump: It will get worse before it gets better
The coronavirus pandemic in the U.S. will likely get worse before it gets better, President Trump told reported Tuesday.
“Some areas of our country are doing very well, others are doing less well,” the president said. “It will probably, unfortunately, get worse before it gets better. Something I don’t like saying about things, but that’s the way it is.”
The president also weighed in on masks, something he has been slow to endorse.
“We’re asking everybody that when you are not able to socially distance, wear a mask,” Trump said. “Whether you like the mask or not, they have an impact. They’ll have an effect, and we need everything we can get.”
The latest U.S. numbers
As of Tuesday, the U.S. has 3,899,211 coronavirus cases.
More than 141,000 people in the U.S. have died from the virus. The country recorded more than 1,000 coronavirus deaths on Tuesday, a grim milestone it last reached in May.
Georgia Gov. asks everyone to wear masks
Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp is asking the state’s residents to commit to wearing a mask for four weeks.
“Today, I am encouraging all Georgians - from every corner of our great state - to do four things for four weeks to stop the spread of COVID-19,” Kemp said in a statement. “If Georgians commit to wearing a mask, socially distancing, washing their hands regularly, and following the guidance in our Executive Order and from public health officials, we can make incredible progress in the fight against COVID-19. Together, we can protect our loved ones, revive our economy, and continue to take measured steps forward.”
The comments come after Kemp, a Republican filed a lawsuit against Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms, a Democrat, and city council members in an attempt to stop the city’s mask ordinance that he said went beyond his executive order.
