Jamel Artis advances in TBT with Sideline Cancer - Cardiac Hill

Former Pitt standout Jamel Artis saw action in the second round of the 2020 edition of The Basketball Tournament with Sideline Cancer on Tuesday afternoon, helping the team to a 76-66 victory over Team Challenge ALS at Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio.

For the second game in a row, Artis was included in the starting lineup of the purple-clad team and saw more than 25 minutes of court time, as he logged 27 minutes after playing 26 in Sideline Cancer’s 93-91 win over Team Hines on Sunday afternoon.

In just under a half-hour, Artis contributed eight points on 2-of-5 shooting from three-point range and a 2-for-4 showing at the charity stripe. The Pitt alum also came up with six rebounds and ranked second on the team in plus-minus rating, with a 14. The only member of the team to fare better in that statistical category was Remy Abell, who scored 17 points and hit the game-winning shot. Abell had a plus-minus rating of 18.

Artis’ performance signified progress from his last outing, as he upped his point and rebound totals from seven and five, respectively. The 6’7”, 215-pound wing also finished strong after a largely quiet game, as he came up with five of his eight points and four of his six rebounds in the fourth quarter of the matchup.

With the win over Challenge ALS, Sideline Cancer advances to the quarterfinals of the tournament, where it will face Syracuse alumni team Boeheim’s Army. Boeheim’s Army is coming off a 76-69 win over Purdue alumni team Men of Mackey in which Eric Devendorf scored 20 points and Donte Green chipped in 16 points and nine rebounds.

The second-round win over Men of Mackey was Boeheim's Army's first appearance in The Basketball Tournament in 2020, as it got a first-round bye. So the Syracuse alumni team will have the benefit of some additional rest when it squares off with Sideline Cancer.

Sideline Cancer and Boeheim’s Army are both TBT fixtures that have taken part in the tournament for the majority of its brief history. Sideline Cancer has participated in the event every year since its inception in 2014, and the Syracuse alumni team has taken part in TBT since 2015. Their round-of-eight matchup is scheduled for July 11 at 4 p.m. ET.
