That’s a criminal, no kitten! Viral video shows a cat stealing cash from a Russian pub - Economic Times

While cats are revered in many countries, Russian popular culture in particular is testimony to the great regard people have for feline ingenuity there. From fairy tales to cartoon characters, cats and kittens cover the gamut from charming scamp to devious schemer; some even played the guitar and used sewing machines. That they are eminently capable of more complex manoeuvres — especially in Russia — cannot be discounted.

The recent viral video showing a kitten pilfering a wad of cash from a pub in Russia and trying to make a getaway before being nabbed in the act by the owner is entirely expected. Ever since the advent of social media, cat burglaries have been a fairly common subject, with a surprisingly large number of videos showing felines of all sizes and shapes purloining cash rather than the usual things that can be expected to be of interest to them such as food, toys or even an unwary rodent.

That is not to say all cats are potential burglars, but T S Eliot had clearly been prescient when writing in 1939 about ‘Macavity’s a Mystery Cat: He’s called the Hidden Paw/ For he’s the master criminal who can defy the law’. The only point of interest in this case is the age of the perpetrator, as they seem to be getting younger and younger now. Even this kitten, it has been revealed, is not a cat’s paw but a brazen repeat offender.
