Trump heads to Mount Rushmore, July Fourth weekend, MLB Spring Training: 5 things to know Friday - USA TODAY

For many, it'll be a beach-less Fourth

Many Americans who were looking forward to going to the beach during the July 4th holiday weekend will have to find another way to have fun, thanks to the coronavirus pandemic. Beginning Friday, several counties in South Florida, including Miami-Dade, and Los Angeles County in California are closing their beaches for the July 4th holiday weekend as part of an effort to get control over spiking COVID-19 infection rates. Other beach communities around the USA are also implementing closures or restrictions.

Kansas mask order goes into effect a day after Texas' surprise mandate

Democratic Gov. Laura Kelly issued an order directing Kansas residents to wear masks in public places and work places starting Friday to combat a surge in coronavirus cases. Also, businesses must require their employees to wear masks in places frequented by the public, even if members of the public are not present or if they prepare food. Two major cities in Ohio – Dayton and the state's capital, Columbus – also have announced mask-wearing mandates that begin Friday. These orders go into effect a day after, in a surprising and dramatic ramp-up, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott ordered that face coverings must be worn in public across most of the state to control spiking numbers of coronavirus cases and hospitalizations. Abbott, a Republican who had pushed Texas' aggressive reopening in May, had previously said the government could not order individuals to wear masks.

The Revolution comes to your home: 'Hamilton' debuts on Disney+

"Hamilton," the Broadway and pop-culture phenomenon that is not only a rousing history lesson but also a character study of key American figure Alexander Hamilton (Lin-Manuel Miranda), will premiere Friday in film form on Disney+. The movie, which features most of the original cast, will open up Miranda's musical that has captivated audiences and sold out theaters for over five years to the masses. And the debut comes days after Broadway announced that its shutdown will last through at least the end of the year due to the coronavirus outbreak. In his review, USA TODAY critic Brian Truitt called "Hamilton," "an amazing look at our country, how immigrants get the job done, where we've been and where we might be going — all portrayed by a mostly non-white cast — that resonates as we celebrate independence during a time when things outside can look a little bleak."

No social distancing at Trump-attended Mount Rushmore event

President Donald Trump will attend a fireworks ceremony Friday at Mount Rushmore –an event that will not include social distancing, according to South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem. The celebration honoring Independence Day occurs a day before the actual July Fourth, when Trump will be back in Washington to host fireworks there. Health experts have expressed concerns about the Rushmore gathering amid the coronavirus outbreak, as they have about the D.C. event. As of mid-week, South Dakota had fewer than 7,000 confirmed cases and fewer than 100 related deaths — low figures even for a state with a population of fewer than 900,000 residents.

All eyes on Major League Baseball as Spring Training resumes

Spring Training 2.0 officially starts Friday across the United States as Major League Baseball will attempt to start a season in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic. For starters, training camp will played in every team’s home ballpark instead of their traditional spring-training facilities in Florida and Arizona, There are more than 1,600 players who underwent tests this week, and MLB is bracing itself for the staggering reality there could be more than 100 positive test results among players and staff members. It’s possible that players who test positive could return as early as 72 hours, but it likely could be at least 10 days to two weeks. Players must test negative twice with tests at least 24 hours apart, and have their temperature below 100.4 on three consecutive days.
