ST. CLOUD — A strike from Cathedral senior Caroline O'Driscoll with 1:27 remaining in the game saved the Crusaders from a loss against Little Falls in their season opener at Whitney Park on Thursday night.
The Flyers controlled the pace for most of the first half, but Cathedral junior Hope Schueller had two scoring opportunities on breakaways that were stopped by Flyers goalie Ana Steadman.
Crusaders eighth grade goalie Tori Anderson made some game-changing saves throughout the game, but midway through the second half Little Falls junior Mikayla Houdek put the Flyers up 1-0.
Cathedral immediately began pushing the tempo, putting numerous shots up that couldn't find their target. It wasn't until senior forward O'Driscoll, who led the team with 20 goals in 2019, found herself alone on the left hand side in the closing minutes.
O'Driscoll slotted the ball past Steadman into the bottom right corner on a picture-perfect shot to even the score. Nobody had another solid shot at goal in the final 1:27, and with no overtime, the game ended in a 1-1 draw.
Cathedral is back in action on Saturday when they travel to Zimmerman.
