Gurianov's 4-goal game sends Stars to Round 2 - Yahoo Sports

The Washington Capitals got Nicklas Backstrom back for Game 5 versus the New York Islanders, but it was a quiet night for the team in red on Thursday night. The Islanders held the Capitals to just 21 shots on goal, including seven in the third period, and shut them out 4-0 and send Washington packing from the Toronto bubble.

Former Capitals goaltender Semyon Varlamov has a 7-2 record in the postseason with the Islanders to go with a 1.67 goals-against average and .934 save percentage. New York’s opponent in the Eastern Conference Second Round will be Philadelphia if the Flyers advance or Boston if Montreal advances.

The Calgary Flames didn’t have the services of Matthew Tkachuk for a fourth straight game, but that didn’t seem to matter in the first period when the team jumped out to a 3-0 lead just 6:34 into the contest. Calgary appeared to be well on their way to forcing a Game 7 before a total collapse in the second period.

The Stars took over Game 6 after Calgary's early lead. Dallas scored seven unanswered goals to eliminate a shellshocked Calgary team thanks in large part to an outstanding performance by Denis Gurianov. According to NHL Public Relations, Gurianov became the second rookie in NHL history to score four goals in a playoff game. Tony Hrkac accomplished the feat back in the 1988 Division Semifinals with St. Louis. Dallas will play against the Colorado Avalanche in the next round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

NY ISLANDERS 4 WASHINGTON 0 (Islanders win series 4-1)

The Islanders advanced to the next round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs by knocking the Capitals out in five games.

Anthony Beauvillier opened the scoring at the 10:19 mark of the first period during a power play and that held up as the game winner. Beauvillier added his sixth goal of the postseason, which ties him for the league lead, during the second stanza.

Nick Leddy and Josh Bailey scored their second goals of the playoffs in the third period. Both markers were empty-netters. Bailey also provided two assists in the victory.

Semyon Varlamov posted a 21-save shutout for his first goose egg of the postseason and the third of his career in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

Braden Holtby stopped 13 of 15 shots in the defeat in what may have been his last game as a member of the Capitals. He is eligible for unrestricted free agency this off-season.

Alex Ovechkin, Tom Wilson, John Carlson and Backstrom tied for the team lead with three shots on goal apiece, but they combined for a minus-11 rating in the loss.

DALLAS 7 CALGARY 3 (Stars win series 4-2)

Calgary got first-period goals from Andrew Mangiapane, Johnny Gaudreau (power play) and Rasmus Andersson to take a 3-0 lead in Game 6.

Miro Heiskanen got the Stars on the board at the 9:36 mark of the first frame when the team was given a man-advantage opportunity. He also picked up three helpers in the victory to give him 12 points in nine playoff matches.

Denis Gurianov took over the match afterward with four of the next six goals. He scored three times in the second period to complete his hat trick and then he got his fourth marker in the third frame to round out the scoring. Gurianov also registered an assist on a power-play goal by Radek Faksa for a five-point effort.

Joe Pavelski got his sixth goal of the postseason in the contest.

Cam Talbot was pulled from the Calgary crease after he surrendered four goals on 15 shots. David Rittich made his series and NHL playoff debut in relief. He allowed three goals on nine shots.

Anton Khudobin played again for Dallas because Ben Bishop (unfit to play) was unavailable. He blocked 38 shots for the win despite a rocky start on Thursday night.

Mattias Janmark and Stephen Johns were also unfit to play for the Stars.
