On Sunday, police officers in Kenosha, Wisconsin, shot Jacob Blake, a 29-year-old Black father, in the back as his three sons watched from his nearby car. Blake was airlifted to a Milwaukee hospital in serious condition; his family attorney said on Tuesday that Blake is now paralyzed, and that it would “take a miracle” for him to walk again.
Now, protests have erupted in Kenosha, with two people killed and one injured early on Wednesday. On Tuesday, Blake’s sister Letetra Widman gave a powerful speech about her brother’s shooting, telling a crowd, “I don’t want your pity. I want change.” Watch the full video of Widman’s speech below:
“So many people have reached out to me saying they’re sorry that this has been happening to my family. Well, don’t be sorry, because this has been happening to my family for a long time, longer than I can account for,” said Widman. “It happened to Emmett Till, Emmett Till is my family. Philando [Castile], Mike Brown, Sandra [Bland]—this has been happening to my family. I shed tears for every single one of these people that it’s happened to.”
“I’m not sad. I’m not sorry. I’m angry. And I’m tired. I haven’t cried one time. I stopped crying years ago. I am numb. I have been watching police murder people that look like me for years,” continued Widman. Blake’s mother, Zietha Blake, has also spoken out, telling CNN’s Don Lemon that hours after her son’s shooting, he told her, “I don’t want to be a burden on anybody. I want my babies. Call my boss.”
