T-Mobile U.S. Inc. announced Friday that its 5G high-speed wireless network is “live in Longmont.”
T-Mobile, whose headquarters are in Belllevue, Wash., said in a news release that its next-generation 5G service will mean “faster data speeds and better connectivity” for “technology enthusiasts, business owners, farmers, first responders, innovators, early adopters” in “lighting up Longmont and the surrounding area with next-generation wireless service.”
Residents and businesses can use the network with a 5G-capable device.
Joel Rushing, T-Mobile senior communications manager, said in a Friday email accompanying the news release that the Longmont area launch is part of the company’s nationwide 5G network, which he said “now covers nearly more than 250 million people, across 1.3 million square miles and 7,500+ cities and towns.”
Rushing said in a another email that “Boulder doesn’t yet have our 5G signal, yet!, but we’re continuing to build out our 5G network every day.”
He said a national list of specific cities where T-Mobile has deployed 5G thus far is available at tinyurl.com/y4mnhe6q. The list includes Lafayette, Louisville, Erie, Superior, Dacono, Frederick and Broomfield as well as Longmont.
T-Mobile said in its news release that “two momentous breakthroughs” enabled the national network expansion.
One was T-Mobile’s completion in April of a merger with Sprint, another national wireless provider.
The second, T-Mobile said, was the company’s recent completion of a launch of a “a commercial nationwide standalone architecture 5G network,” which it said is “a critical building block for the continued development of 5G and helps expand T-Mobile’s footprint … to almost 2,000 additional cities and towns, including Longmont.”
T-Mobile said it is also “aggressively rolling out what’s referred to as mid-band spectrum, acquired as part of the Sprint merger.” It said that “allows lots of data to travel at faster speeds over relatively far distances.”
