Of all the things, Cale Makar does at a high level, his skating ability has always been near the top of the list.

It’s not just sheer straight-ahead speed, although he’s got plenty of that, but his feel for when to change speeds and ability to change direction with the puck is already elite. It’s a big part of why the Colorado Avalanche rookie a finalist for the Calder Trophy for the NHL Rookie of the Year.

That skating ability was very much on display to start the third period in the Colorado’s win over Arizona that gave the Avalanche a 3-1 series lead in their best of seven first round series.

Makar had a step and a half, maybe two when he collected the puck just inside his own blue line and was at full speed quickly. Many Coyotes were caught flat-footed as he flew through the zone.

Alex Goligoski was the last defenseman with a chance in the high slot. Makar spun him around and then flipped a backhander past newly-inserted goalie Antti Raanta. The goal made it 5-1 as Colorado romped to a 7-1 victory.

He finished the game with a goal and an assist giving him two goals and four assists in seven postseason games (that includes three round robin games).

Makar, who won the Hobey Baker Award at UMass, debuted with the Avalanche during the playoffs last year. In his first full season, a relative term in 2020, he’s thrived. Despite being a first-year player and a defenseman, he was second on the team in scoring. He and Vancouver’s Quinn Hughes are the overwhelming favorites to be Rookie of the Year.

Hughes leads all NHL rookies with 53 points on eight goals and 45 assists in 68 games. Makar had 12 goals, 38 assists and 50 points in 57 games to lead all first-year players in points per game (0.88 vs. Hughes 0.78). Makar’s missed time with an upper body injury created the discrepancy in games.
