A delayed goal horn didn’t stop the Lightning from (eventually) celebrating Yanni Gourde’s goal early in the second period against the Islanders in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference final Monday night.
When the Lightning forward slipped the piece of rubber past New York’s Semyon Varlamov, officials didn’t immediately blow their whistles. Play continued in Edmonton as if the goal hadn’t happened.
Pat Maroon was able to move the puck behind Varlamov’s left leg, forcing the goaltender to look over his left shoulder to keep track of the play. Maroon poked the puck in between Varlamov’s skate and the goal post, allowing Gourde to grab it in the wide-open crease.
“The, uh, puck entered the net,” the official said seconds after the goal was actually scored.
On the broadcast, Gourde hugged Cedric Paquette before finding Maroon near the team bench as the Lightning took a 4-1 lead.
“I knew there was a chance that it could have been in,” Gourde said. “Obviously, as soon as I shot it, I saw the stick there but it goes so fast I didn’t know if the puck actually crossed the line right away, so we just kept on playing and when I heard the buzzer go off, I kind of knew the puck went in.”
From the bench, coach Jon Cooper wasn’t sure if the puck went in either, especially based on his team’s reaction (or lack thereof) to the play.
“All the players usually know when pucks go in the net, and nobody did,” he said after the 8-2 win. “Gordo’s scored a lot of goals in his career, from 3 feet outside of the net, and that’s another one. And when that’s happening, you know Gordo’s doing the right things.”
Late in the third period, Gourde netted the Lightning’s eighth goal of the night with a one-man advantage, his first power-play goal the playoffs.
He raced down the slot as Kevin Shattenkirk passed him the puck from the right corner. He quickly shot on Varlamov to net his fifth goal through 14 postseason games.
