It took a minute for the Leslie boys soccer team to heat up in the pouring rain during its matchup with Stockbridge on Wednesday night, but once the ball started going in the net it became a contagious effort for one player in particular.

Leslie senior Tristan Feighner scored seven goals, including five in the second half, to power the Blackhawks to a 7-1 win over the Panthers. The performance came on the heels of a school-record eight-goal game Feighner had against Perry earlier this season. Garrett Mays tallied five assists to further cement his name as the program’s career assist leader, while Mason Krabel added one assist.

Both teams battled against Mother Nature in the first half, as they struggled to find the finishing touch on a slippery playing surface.

“The first half took place in a torrential downpour and insane winds,” said Leslie head coach Mike Compton. “It might be the worst weather I have experienced during any soccer game in my 29 years around the game.  Both teams were understandably sloppy as the ball slid sometimes and stopped to float at others. We ended the first half with a 2-1 lead.

“Tristan Feighner had a huge night for us. He had a beautiful outside-of-foot touch on a lofted ball played over his left shoulder by Garrett Mays to make space for his last finish of the night.”

Stockbridge’s Luke Suojanen knotted the game at 1-1 late in the first half, but the Panthers had no answer for a powerful Blackhawk attack in the second half.

“Given the weather conditions, I thought our guys played tough,” said Stockbridge head coach Brent Young. “We have gone through some growing pains this year, but I see our guys getting better with each game. Our defense helped stop several shots on goal led by Ben Young and Isaac Lance and Paul Montanera and Luke Suojanen also played an outstanding game. Hopefully, we can build on this effort and keep improving."

Leslie (4-3-1) will face East Lansing on Thursday at 5:30 p.m., while Stockbridge (0-7) will take on Grass Lake.
