SALISBURY, Md. – Wicomico County’s COVID-19 postivity rate has been hovering above 5% for more than a week. The City of Salisbury is now cracking down on social gatherings with some new restrictions.
Starting at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, September 16th, social gatherings at private residences in Salisbury will be limited to 15 people inside and 50 people for outside gatherings. “The order is incredibly narrow in scope. It only impacts if I’m going to have a gathering at my house, it’s raining, I’m going to have 20 people over. Five have to go,” said Acting Mayor Julia Glanz.
Acting Mayor Glanz tells 47ABC that the decision comes after an uptick in cases in the area as students return back to Salisbury University. “We all let down our guard when we’re with our family and friends. It’s easy to understand why we’re in the situation that we are. But the goal is to slow the spread a little bit,” said Acting Mayor Glanz.
Salisbury University’s Vice President of Student Affairs Dr. Dane Foust says that the university is doing its best to remind students to stay safe. Dr. Foust says that for now, classes will not go completely virtual unless there’s a severe rise in positive tests – and if the university is prepared to handle students’ needs. “At this point, we are not planning to do that. We’re planning on running our operations as they currently are. But we do realize that things happen very, very quickly as well,” said Dr. Foust.
One Salisbury resident tells 47ABC she’s all for the new rule – and she hopes it’ll help stop the spread. “We need to stop the spread, and if we have to then I’m willing to just not hang out with people. It’s a good thing,” said Caitlin Peerman.
Others say they’re disappointed to see that cases are rising. But they also say ultimately – the city must do what’s best for its citizens. “We’re not moving towards more open and free rules but that things are going to become more regulated and restricted. However, I think that everyone’s going to do whatever’s necessary,” said Nick Kiraly.
Acting Mayor Glanz says that the city will reassess the new regulation about once every two weeks. Meanwhile at Salisbury University, Dr. Foust says an anonymous tip line has been set up to report any COVID-19 violations.
