Blue Devils Stunned at No. 2 FSU, 1-0, on Late Goal - Duke University - GoDuke.com

TALLAHASSEE, Fla.— In a highly anticipated top-five matchup, the fifth-ranked Duke women's soccer team lost on a heartbreaking goal, 1-0, with 14 seconds remaining in regulation to second-ranked Florida State Thursday evening at Seminole Soccer Complex in Tallahassee, Fla.

With the loss, the Blue Devils fell to 5-3-2 overall and 3-3-2 in the ACC, while the Seminoles improved to 7-0-0, 7-0-0 in the ACC.

"It's so hard," said Duke head coach Robbie Church.  "I'm just so just so torn for the players, because they worked so hard two games in a row against two of the best teams in the country, and on their own fields, and we've been step-for-step with them the whole time. We just haven't scored. We were better though in the final third today. We had better passes, better situations. You have to score in those situations. But we didn't drop off at the end; we kept coming at them and coming at them, still attacking."

With less than a minute remaining in regulation, Malia Berkely of Florida State ran down the pitch, finding Jenna Nighswonger for a shot from the penalty mark that was punched over the goal by Duke goalkeeper Ruthie Jones.

Florida State was then given a corner kick that was attempted by Yujie Zhao. Zhao found Jaelin Howell, who scored the game-winning goal on a turnaround shot from about 10 yards out with 14 seconds remaining.

While Florida State outshot Duke in the first half by a 7-3 ledger, the Blue Devils came away with the better opportunities as they logged two more shots on goal.

The Blue Devils best scoring opportunity came in the first half at the 23:20 mark when Marykate McGuire passed the ball to Mackenzie Pluck, who sent a shot off the corner of the crossbar.

Around three minutes later, Sydney Simmons sent a corner kick past the defense to Taylor Mitchell, who attempted a header that was narrowly punched over the crossbar by Seminole goalkeeper Cristina Roque.

Pluck, a product of North Wales, Pa., had another scoring opportunity in the first half when she split the Seminole center backs and received a pass from Sophie Jones, giving her a one-on-one opportunity with the goalkeeper that she was unable to finish.

In the second half, Duke was unable to get its offense going as the Blue Devils were outshot by a 12-1 ledger.

The Blue Devils best scoring opportunity of the second half came with around 16 minutes remaining in regulation as Grace Watkins found Pluck running down the pitch. Pluck then crossed a perfect pass to Delaney Graham, who narrowly missed the ball as it went wide right.

For the match, Duke allowed 19 shots, which is the most the Blue Devils have allowed to any team this season.

The Blue Devils Ruthie Jones collected four saves in 90 minutes in goal for the Blue Devils.

"They didn't have her down for that many saves, but the ones did were spectacular," added Church on Jones.  "And then she punched a lot of balls. She really came at their crossers and punched balls. She did great. Really, really well."

Duke will look to bounce back as it continues the road swing facing Miami in the regular-season finale Sunday, Nov. 1 at 3:30 p.m., live on ACC Network.
