Small magnitude 3.4 earthquake 21km SW of Ocotillo Wells, CA, USA

A magnitude 3.4 earthquake near Ocotillo Wells, California, was reported only 12 minutes ago by the United States Geological Survey (USGS), considered the key international and national agency that monitors seismic activity in the US. The quake occurred at a very shallow depth of 6.8 km (4.2 miles) beneath the epicenter early morning on 20 October at 3.30 am local time.
The magnitude, exact epicenter location and depth could be revised within the next few minutes as the agency updates and refines its calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service at VolcanoDiscovery also identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 3.4 as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Towns and cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt, based on preliminary calculations, include Mt Laguna (pop. 100) in 20 km (12 miles) distance with weak shaking expected, Borrego Springs (pop. 3,400) in 29 km (18 miles) distance, very weak shaking expected, San Diego Country Estates (pop. 10,100) in 46 km (29 miles) distance, very weak shaking expected, Alpine (pop. 14,200) in 48 km (30 miles) distance, very weak shaking expected.
