An earthquake of magnitude 5.0 occurred 31 minutes ago 185 km west of Karaj, Iran, the German Research Centre for Geosciences in Potsdam (GFZ) reported. The quake hit at a shallow depth of 10 km beneath the epicenter early afternoon on Saturday 24 October at 3.34 pm local time. Magnitude and other quake parameters can still change in the coming hours as the agency continues to process seismic data.
A second report was later issued by GeoAu agency, which listed it as a magnitude 5.2 earthquake. Other agencies reporting the same quake include United States Geological Survey (USGS) at magnitude 5.0, Iranian Seismological Center (IRSC) at magnitude 5.4, and European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 5.0.
Generally quakes of this magnitude are recorded by more than one agency and the results can vary, with subsequent reports that come in after the first one often showing more accuracy.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. In areas close to the epicenter, it has the potential to cause damage to buildings etc.
Towns or cities near the epicenter that are likely to be affected include Abhar (pop. 69,900) at a distance of 59 km with light shaking, Khorramdarreh (pop. 50,500) at a distance of 65 km with light shaking, Pasragad Branch (pop. 787,900) at a distance of 107 km with weak shaking, and Karaj (pop. 1,448,100) at a distance of 185 km with weak shaking.

In Iran bebte heute die Erde mit einer Stärke von 5.0. Laut Angaben des Geoforschungszentrums in Potsdam (GFZ) ereignete sich das Beben am Samstag, dem 24. Oktober, früh nachmittags um 03:34 Lokalzeit 59 km südwestlich von der Stadt Abhar in einer Tiefe von 10 km.
Eine zweite Agentur, GeoAu, gab das Erdbeben abweichend mit einer Stärke von 5.2 an. Andere Quellen zum gleichen Beben sind u.a. United States Geological Survey (USGS) (Stärke 5.0), Iranian Seismological Center (IRSC) (Stärke 5.4)und European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) (Stärke 5.0).
Generell gilt, dass Beben dieser Magnitude normalerweise von mehrere seismischen Beobachtungsstellen erfasst werden. Die Angaben z.B. zu Stärke und Tiefe können dabei von Agentur zu Agentur (meist geringfügig) unterschiedlich sein, v.a. in der Zeit unmittelbar nach dem Beben. In der Folgezeit werden Daten immer weiter und genauer ausgewertet. Neuberechnungen führen so mit der Zeit zu immer verlässlicheren Ergebnissen.
Anhand der vorläufigen seismischen Daten müsste das Beben von vielen Menschen in der Nähe des Epizentrums gespürt worden sein. Nennenswerter Schaden sollte bei dieser Magnitude nicht aufgetreten sein, außer möglicherweise heruntergefallenen Gegenständen, kleinen Rissen u.s.w.
Folgende Orte in der Nähe des Epizentrums wurden wahrscheinlich vom Beben betroffen: Abhar (69,900 Einw. in 59 km Entfernung, mäßige Erschütterungen zu erwarten), Khorramdarreh (50,500 Einw. in 65 km Entfernung, mäßige Erschütterungen), Pasragad Branch (787,900 Einw. in 107 km Entfernung, leichtes Bodenschütteln) und Karaj (1,448,100 Einw. in 185 km Entfernung, leichtes Bodenschütteln).
