On Monday, Virginia Tech Hokies Head Coach Justin Fuente confirmed that two reserve defensive players have opted out for the remainder of the season. Both Redshirt Junior Defensive End Zion DeBose and Redshirt Sophomore Linebacker Keshon Artis will not participate with the Virginia Tech Hokies Football Program for the remainder of the 2020 season. The Hokies have three games remaining before concluding their 2020 modified regular season.
The Virginia Tech Head Coach touched on the two players and spoke to their conversations.
“The conversation with them was like, classes are going to go all online at Thanksgiving and they would, I would imagine, just stay home,” Virginia Tech coach Justin Fuente said.
The COVID-19 Pandemic has given legitimate cause for players to opt out of their athletic duties in order to prioritize their health. The transition to online only classes suggests that both DeBose and Artis could complete their academic responsibilities from their respective homes without the compromise of risking their well-being. Both student-athletes will have the opportunity to retain their eligibility from the 2020 season.
Zion DeBose, a 6-foot-1 inch 245-pound Defensive End, has appeared in 17 games, including 4 games in 2020 for the Virginia Tech Hokies. In total, he has compiled 13 tackes, 1.5 tackles for loss and 1.0 sacks in his career in Blacksburg. The Redshirt Junior Defensive Lineman recorded his first career sack against N.C. State in Virginia Tech's season opener. He then missed two games against Duke and North Carolina, before contributing against Boston College. He last played against Louisville in the teams 42-35 victory.
After redshirting in 2017, DeBose played in all 13 games for the Hokies in 2018, primarily on Special Teams. He missed the entirety of 2019 due to injury. The North Carolina native was listed as the No. 852 overall prospect per the 247Sports Composite Rankings in the class of 2017. He was rated as the No. 49 Weak-Side Defensive End nationally and the No. 28 prospect in North Carolina.
Keshon Artis, a 6-foot 244-pound Linebacker, has appeared in 22 games, including 7 of 8 games in 2020 for the Virginia Tech Hokies. He has compiled 6 total tackles in his career, including a season high of 2 total tackles against Boston College. The Redshirt Sophomore Linebacker played in 11 games as a true freshman, predominantly on Special Teams. As a sophomore, Artis opted for a redshirt season after playing sparingly in the team's first four games.
The Oscar Smith High School Alum is a Virginia native and was regarded as the No. 522 overall prospect by the 247Sports Composite Rankings coming out of the 2018 Recruiting Class. He was listed as the No. 26 Inside Linebacker prospect nationally and the No. 11 player in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
