Mobile-based Gulf Distributing acquires Huntsville-based Supreme - AL.com

Mobile-based Gulf Distributing has sealed a deal to acquire the operating assets of Huntsville-based Supreme Beverage Co., meaning the company will cover 62 of Alabama’s 67 counties.

Prior to the deal, Gulf Distributing served 44 counties and Supreme covered 18 in north Alabama. Gulf will now cover everything but a five-county region around Auburn. Its divisions handle a wide range of beers and related alcoholic beverages, as well as Red Bull and other non-alcoholic beverages.

According an announcement made Monday by Gulf, Supreme Beverage will be operated as Gulf Distributing Company of Alabama, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Gulf Distributing Holdings. Michael, Joseph and Phillip Schilleci of Supreme “will become stakeholders in Gulf Distributing Holdings, with Michael assuming a position on Gulf Distributing Holdings’ executive advisory committee,” according to the announcement.

“We are excited to expand our distribution footprint into the north part of Alabama,” said Elliot B. Maisel, Chairman and CEO of Gulf Distributing Holdings. “Huntsville is a vibrant city with a rapidly growing economy and population. On behalf of the Maisel family, we are humbled by the trust the Schilleci family has placed in us, and extremely grateful for their partnership and for our families’ friendship. We look forward to continuing the excellent standard of service set by Supreme Beverage in this market, as well as bringing the strengths and scale of Gulf Distributing Holdings to our new retail customers.”

Monday’s statement says Birmingham-based members of the Schilleci family have been “major players in the Alabama beer distribution business for three generations, since 1946.”

The announcement is neither the first such expansion announced by Gulf in recent years, nor the first involving the Schilleci family. According to the Gulf Distributing Holdings website, Gulf acquired Montgomery-based Allstate Beverage Co. in 2009. In 2017, Gulf Distributing Co. of Birmingham was formed by a joint venture between the Maisel family and the Schilleci family.

According to figures released by Gulf, the addition of Supreme’s 200 employees brings the Gulf family of businesses to 1,200 employees and 23.4 million cases handled per year. Brands that will be represented by Gulf Distributing Co. of Alabama include Red Bull, Heineken USA, MolsonCoors, Pabst, Abita, Trim Tab, Singing River and more. Throughout the state, other distributors carry beverage brands that Gulf does not.

The transaction was closed on Friday, according to Monday’s announcement. Its value was not revealed.
