Perched on a hill above Lake Zurich, The Dolder Grand is a palatial fixture on the skyline of Switzerland's financial center. The hotel is removed from the hustle and bustle of Zurich, but guests can easily reach the Bahnhofstrasse on a private funicular — the perfect mix of convenience and solitude. While the original 1899 building features traditional turrets and timbered details, the hotel underwent an extensive renovation in 2008, adding two steel-and-glass wings packed with ultra-modern rooms.

There are several stand-out features at The Dolder Grand, including a 43,000-square-foot spa and golf course. But its most impressive offering is probably the extensive art collection. Guests are greeted by an Andy Warhol painting behind the front desk, and they can view more than 100 other works from the likes of Takashi Murakami and Salvador Dalí throughout the hotel. The hotel’s 175 rooms vary in size and style — the original Main Building offers cozy and traditional rooms, while the wings feature sleek furnishings and floor-to-ceiling windows.

Key Specs

  • Free Wi-Fi: Yes
  • Resort Fee: No
  • Room Rate: $$$$

Notable Amenities

Private limousine transfers, cigar lounge, full-service Guerlain Spa

Hotel Description

Part of the Oetker Collection, The Woodward was one of the finest hotel openings of 2021. The property sits in a historic building from 1901 and overlooks Lake Geneva, making guests feel as if they’re staying at a Belle Époque lake house — one with ebony wood walls, gilded mirrors, and Baccarat crystal chandeliers. The opulence extends to the 26 rooms (all suites), where silk wallpaper, fireplaces, and lake-facing balconies are the norm.

Elsewhere on the property, guests can choose from two fine dining experiences: L'Atelier de Joël Robuchon and Le Jardinier, both outposts of the Michelin-starred restaurants in New York. There is also an extensive wellness center, complete with a gym, a Guerlain Spa, several steam rooms and Swedish baths, and the city’s longest private indoor swimming pool. If you decide to venture out, ask the staff to arrange a private boat tour on the lake or whip up a picnic at Le Jardinier to take out to wine country.

Speaking of rooms, guests can choose which view they prefer — Alps, Lake Geneva, or Lausanne’s city center — with balconies and terraces available in some spaces. There are also plenty of fun activities on offer, ranging from Christmas markets in the winter to lake cruises in the summer.

Owned by the Singapore-based GHM hotel group, the hotel looks like a modern ski villa on the outside but features sleek open fireplaces, sushi restaurants, and contemporary room furnishings behind its doors.

While the Chedi Andermatt caters to winter sports enthusiasts, it really excels at the après-ski game. After a day on the slopes, guests can return to one of the 123 elegant rooms, which are filled with warm wood details and cozy seating areas. They can then choose which comfortable space to visit next, whether it’s the quiet cigar lounge, full-service bar with plenty of leather sofas, or spa with a Finnish barrel sauna and indoor lap pool.

Key Specs

  • Free Wi-Fi: Yes
  • Resort Fee: No

Notable Amenities

Chauffeured Rolls-Royces, free breakfast and daily restaurant credits, indoor-outdoor pool

Hotel Description

The magic of Gstaad Palace hits you before you even walk into the doors, sitting like a storybook castle tucked away in Berner Oberland — complete with turrets, towers, and flags. The hotel first opened in 1913, and you can feel the history (and opulence) at every turn. The rooms and suites are perfect for resting up between activities, with inviting details like plaid wallpaper and embroidered throw pillows. Even the smallest room option (dubbed the “Cosy Room”) has a separate seating area and spacious bathroom with a tub.

Despite its almost imposingly opulent appearance, Gstaad Palace is a wonderful place for families and children. The hotel holds kids-only parties during the holidays, as well as appropriately magical activities like pony rides and baking lessons. (There’s even a bouncy castle in one of the parks.) Guests can also drop their children off at the Kids’ Club, then enjoy some of the grown-up offerings at the hotel — we suggest booking a massage at the Palace Spa or enjoying some truffle fondue at the underground La Fromagerie.

Kulm Hotel

Why We Chose It

Kulm Hotel is the oldest property in St. Moritz, and it continues to shine as a luxurious mecca for winter sports enthusiasts.

Key Specs

  • Free Wi-Fi: Yes
  • Resort Fee: No
  • Room Rate: $$$$

Notable Amenities

Discounted ski passes, on-site ice skating rink, free laundry service for kids

Hotel Description

When the Kulm Hotel opened in 1856, it became the first hotel in the storied ski town of St. Moritz. The destination has plenty of other accommodations today, but Kulm Hotel remains one of the absolute best. Some perks haven’t changed — like its stunning Alpine views and proximity to the main ski funicular — but a string of renovations in the 21st century has kept the hotel fresh and modern. The 164 rooms and suites vary in size, ranging from cozy single rooms to multi-bedroom suites with fireplaces and lake-facing balconies.

But the main attraction at Kulm Hotel is the constant lineup of activities. The hotel hosted several events during the Winter Olympics in 1928 and 1948, so it’s properly primed for all winter sports — the concierge can help you get discounted ski passes, book an exhilarating bobsled run, or even arrange a horse-drawn carriage to pick you up right outside the hotel. There is plenty of fun to be had in the warmer months as well, with an on-site golf course and tons of hiking trails and watersports on the lake. Fill your itinerary with action, then wind down at Kulm Hotel’s spa and Michelin-starred restaurants.

Why We Chose It

Just minutes away from St. Moritz, Grand Hotel Kronenhof Pontresina is just as glitzy and action-packed as its more famous neighbors.

Key Specs

  • Free Wi-Fi: Yes
  • Resort Fee: No
  • Room Rate: $$$

Notable Amenities

Unlimited spa access, free shuttle service, heated ski lockers

Hotel Description

Located about five miles outside of St. Moritz, Pontresina is a gorgeous mountain village perfect for travelers wanting something a bit more understated. That’s not to say the town is any less extravagant than other Swiss ski towns — just take a look at Grand Hotel Kronenhof Pontresina, a neo-Baroque resort that looks like the setting of a Wes Anderson movie. The hotel has been welcoming guests since 1848, and although the guest rooms are sleek and modern, the frescoed lobby and velvet-clad lounges are beautiful reminders of the past.

As with many Swiss hotels, Grand Hotel Kronenhof Pontresina excels at both outdoor activities and après-ski relaxation. In the winter, guests can spend their time skiing, tobogganing, or taking a full-moon snowshoe tour; come summertime, the activities switch to mountain biking, sailing, paragliding, and trekking with native mountain goats. (The hotel staff can help arrange all of these outings, and then some.) At the end of the day, amenities like saunas, a glass-walled indoor pool, spa treatments, three restaurants, and a bowling alley with made-to-order fondue are all available.

The Omnia

Why We Chose It

With minimal decor and a health-focused spa, the Omnia puts a chic and modern spin on the traditional Swiss mountain lodge.

Key Specs

  • Free Wi-Fi: Yes
  • Resort Fee: No
  • Room Rate: $$$$

Notable Amenities

Train station transfers, balconies in every room, free breakfast

Hotel Description

Built high on a rock overlooking Zermatt, the Omnia puts a modern American spin on the traditional mountain lodge. After ascending in a glass elevator built directly into the cliff, guests are welcomed by a light-filled lobby and staff wearing Marc Jacobs uniforms. The 30 rooms and suites were designed by New York-based architect Ali Tayar, and the spaces are defined by clean lines, warm woods, and zero clutter.

This sense of zen extends to the expansive wellness center, where guests can enjoy an indoor-outdoor pool, Finnish sauna, botanical-infused steam room, Turkish bath, and outdoor whirlpool with views of the Matterhorn. The on-site restaurant offers a tasting menu as well as à la carte dishes, both prioritizing seasonal ingredients and vegetarian recipes.

Grand Hotel Les Trois Rois

Why We Chose It

Hotel Les Trois Rois is the only five-star hotel in Basel (and one of the oldest hotels in Switzerland), with flamboyant rooms dripping with tapestries and velvet.

Key Specs

  • Free Wi-Fi: Yes
  • Resort Fee: No
  • Room Rate: $$$$

Notable Amenities

Free nonalcoholic minibars, cigar lounge, pet-friendly rooms

Hotel Description

While many Swiss cities are awash with five-star hotels, Basel has just one: Hotel Les Trois Rois, a Belle Époque beauty on the banks of the Rhine. The hotel first opened in 1844, but it received a second life after an extensive renovation in 2006. Today, it remains one of the most enviable addresses in town. There are touches of old-school luxury covering every inch of space, from the lobby decked out in crystal chandeliers and marble columns to the tuxedoed waiters at Cheval Blanc, the in-house restaurant specializing in French haute cuisine.

The 101 guest rooms and suites are just as sumptuous, with thick curtains, dark patterned wallpaper, and velvet furniture. It’s worth upgrading to a suite to experience more incredible perks: The lime-green Napoleon Suite is extra opulent with ceiling frescoes and stucco work, while the Rooftop Suite comes with three bathrooms and a roof terrace with a hot tub. Other amenities include daily afternoon tea, a cigar lounge, and a fitness center overlooking the river.

Bürgenstock Resort

Bürgenstock Resort Winter Wellbeing Retreat

Why We Chose It

With four hotels and multiple spas and restaurants, Bürgenstock Resort is one of the finest wellness centers in Switzerland.

Key Specs

  • Free Wi-Fi: Yes
  • Resort Fee: No
  • Room Rate: $$$$

Notable Amenities

Complimentary boat shuttles, Acqua di Parma bath products, free on-site movie theater

Hotel Description

It’s hard to miss the hilltop Bürgenstock Resort, whether you approach via boat on Lake Lucerne or ride up on the private funicular. While the Bürgenstock brand made its hospitality stamp here back in 1873 (Audrey Hepburn and Sophia Loren number among its most famous fans), the current resort complex was unveiled in 2017 — a sprawling micro-village with four hotels, two spas, and a diverse line-up of restaurants and bars.

The 102 guest rooms vary greatly depending on which hotel you choose: At the Waldhotel, for example, rooms are minimal and contemporary in design and come with balconies overlooking the Alps. Rooms and suites in the Bürgenstock Hotel are among the most expensive, but come with luxe wood furnishing and bathtubs overlooking Lake Lucerne. The spas, restaurants, and common areas are open to all guests (regardless of room choice), so everyone can enjoy multiple swimming pools and wellness treatments, as well as dining options ranging from sushi to traditional Swiss fondue.

Final Verdict

If you’re searching for luxury hotels in Switzerland, you can’t do much better than Badrutt’s Palace Hotel in St. Moritz. The palatial property features lake-facing rooms and more than a dozen restaurants, as well as easy access to ski slopes and water sports. For something a bit more modern, check out the Omnia in Zermatt, where the minimalist decor and an expansive wellness center encourage unplugged relaxation. And if you’re feeling a bit indecisive, you can always opt for Bürgenstock Resort on Lake Lucerne. The sprawling complex has four separate hotels and a huge roster of spas and restaurants, so you’re sure to find something that fits your particular bill.

Know Before You Go

  • Many Swiss properties close between the summer and winter seasons, so be sure to double check each hotel’s operating dates before you do too much research.
  • Train travel is a magical way to hop from town to town in Switzerland, and the Swiss Rail Pass makes a great case for ditching the rental car. Plus, most luxury hotels offer free shuttles to and from their respective towns’ train stations.
  • Don’t be surprised when the local language changes from town to town: Switzerland has four national languages, so you may find people speaking French in one area and German in the next.

How We Chose These Hotels

We evaluated dozens of the best luxury hotels in Switzerland before choosing the options on this list. We considered elements like the property’s reputation, quality of service, design and architecture, location, and notable amenities. We also looked at each property’s dining options, whether there is a spa on-site, and the types of experiences available to guests. In determining this list, we evaluated numerous customer reviews and considered whether the property has collected any accolades in recent years.
