Here's how a 4BHK Mumbai home was transformed into a luxurious rental apartment - Architectural Digest India

A custom bar cabinet made from solid oak and cane wave panels is placed beside the island bar. The low television console uses an open grain oak veneer with custom cane work on shutters. A chaise lounge with removable back cushions were opted for to generate an open and airy feel.

The elaborate reworking of the original 4BHK configuration—with a private lift lobby, a kitchen, four ensuite bedrooms, and a large living-dining space—of the apartment was a key segment of this renovation assignment. First, the living room with a separate dining area was made larger by reconfiguring the laundry and storage rooms, and breaking down the temple area. The living room then opens up to mini corridors on either side that house two bedrooms each. Further, an entry to one of the ensuites was moved to create a powder bathroom. The ducts attached to two of the bathrooms were retiled to make space for laundry drying and utility storage. Breaking down another store room and creating a spacious square-shaped kitchen allowed for a comfortable user experience in the space, whilst retaining the service exit to the lobby.

This cosy dining nook is set against a mirror and beadboard panelled backdrop. The relaxing cerulean upholstered bench, Lasa marble topped table, and double cane sheeted lime oak finished chairs were tailor-made to fit this snug space. The ceiling with framework pattern was intentionally dropped to accommodate air-conditioning and fire services. A sizeable lighting fixture in cane from Gulmohar Lane, and the abstract oil on canvas piece painting add character and depth.

The versatile kitchen is designed for everyday conveniences and for entertaining guests too. The modern artworks on the wall are prints that were sourced from New York.

Equipped with all the necessary appliances, the hearth sees a dark charcoal tone for the cabinetry with a shaker-style shutter design. It is contrasted with timeless white quartz worktops, and the classic no-fuss subway tiles on the backsplash.

The interior design sees a play of warm and clever materials and colour, inspired by European club culture. Ekta and team went through the tedious process of selecting the durable, easy to maintain textiles, and nailing a colour palette that was classic, vibrant and reminiscent of a rich, varied and layered lounge somewhere in Europe. The curtains are light with a blend of different finishes to allow heaps of natural light into the rooms. “We avoided any prints and patterns, respecting the scale and ceiling heights. For rugs and carpets we custom created pieces with Jaipur Rugs, that would suit the space perfectly. We turned single ready curtains from Fabindia into bed runners so we could stay on a budget, and yet get that premium layered look. Upholstery fabrics chosen were mostly Indian and European brands of microfibre varieties, which would have epic quality and longevity, and were within our budget at the same time,” explains Ekta.
