Toyota just debuted the latest model year of its boxy flagship family minivans – the 2024 Toyota Alphard and the Toyota Vellfire. Both minivans’ updated external styling coupled with their high-end interior furnishings make the Alphard and Vellfire the ultimate family vans.
Since Toyota first released the Alphard in 2002, the minivan has evolved into a luxurious people mover. Both the Alphard and its twin, the Vellfire, can comfortably seat up to a family of seven.
Toyota designed both minivans primarily with the rear seat passengers in mind. To give all occupants a smooth and quiet ride, the Japanese automaker equipped the minivans with vibration-dampening and noise-reducing solutions.
The 2024 model year of the minivans also have premium seating that offer increased legroom and comfort – especially for customers who opt for the highest-trim level, the Executive Lounge grade. While Toyota will sell neither the Alphard nor the Vellfire in America, the similarly-sized and well-loved Toyota Sienna may be the next best thing.
The 2024 Toyota Alphard And Vellfire Are The Ultimate Family Minivans
The 2024 Toyota Alphard and Vellfire are 7-seater premium Japanese minivans. It is the flagship people mover in Toyota’s global vehicle offerings.
To get an idea of both minivans’ sizes, Toyota designed the Toyota Alphard and Vellfire specifically for the narrow city streets of urban Japan – hence it is slightly shorter in length and slightly thinner in width than the Toyota Sienna. However, both the Alphard and Vellfire are slightly taller than the Sienna.
The two minivans are the luxury vehicle of choice in Japan when the capacity of the 4-seater giant JDM luxury sedan Toyota Century just won’t cut it. To sweeten the deal even more, the Alphard and Vellfire are much cheaper than the $136,000 price tag of the Toyota Century in Japan.
In Japan, Toyota sells the Alphard starting at around $37,500 for the lowest-trim level, scaling to $60,600 for the highest-trim level. Toyota priced the Vellfire slightly more expensive than the Alphard. Pricing for the Vellfire starts at around $45,500 for the Z Premier grade, which is the lowest trim level, while the highest Executive Lounge trim level starts at around $62,000.
This means that Japanese drivers can buy the already luxurious base-level Toyota Alphard at around the same cost as a base-level Toyota Sienna in America.
Unfortunately, the 2024 Alphard and Vellfire aren’t available in America, and Toyota has shown no indication of offering the two vehicles in the North American market anytime soon. Currently, the 2024 model year of both minivans is only available in select markets such as Japan and Taiwan.
The Japanese automaker estimates to sell around 8,500 of the minivans combined monthly, of which 70 percent will be Alphards while the remaining 30 percent will be Vellfires.
Toyota Tailored The 2024 Toyota Vellfire For Families That Prefer A Sportier Ride
At first glance, the two minivans look exactly the same – they’re basically twins. Save for a few external design choices and exclusive options, the Toyota Alphard and the Toyota Vellfire are the same vehicles.
So what makes a buyer choose the Alphard or Vellfire over the other? In previous model years, not much as both were pretty much the same luxury minivans. But for the 2024 model year, Toyota said designed both cars to be more differentiated by tailoring each for two distinct owner preferences.
The exterior design of the Vellfire reflects its active personality, from the sporty front grille to the aggressive rear light design. To make the vehicle more responsive to driver inputs, Toyota equipped the 2024 Vellfire with two exclusive pieces of equipment.
Toyota increased the Vellfire’s body rigidity by equipping the minivan with a front performance brace. Buyers also have the option to equip it with a 2.4-liter inline four-cylinder DOHC turbo engine – exclusive to the Vellfire. While it’s probably not as fast as the Voyah Dreamer, which is one of the fastest minivans in the world today, Toyota said that it tuned the engine to give drivers a sense of acceleration even with minimal pedal input. The Japanese automaker also tuned the engine to deliver a sporty sound.
Furthermore, the Vellfire has an exclusive Z Premier grade option that perfectly pairs the vehicle’s sporty appearance with a jet black coat of paint with chrome highlights.
But how does this all differ from the 2024 Toyota Alphard?
The Whole Family Can Go On A Luxurious Drive With The 2024 Toyota Alphard
Meanwhile, Toyota positioned the 2024 Alphard for drivers that prefer refined luxury or more suitably, owners who have chauffeurs to drive them around the city.
While it isn't as luxurious as the Toyota Alphard-based Lexus LM luxury minivan, Toyota still designed the Alphard with luxury in mind – albeit to a lesser degree.
The 2024 Alphard’s sophisticated exterior design perfectly fits the customer group that Toyota tailored the minivan for. It has sleek front fascia and light designs that have mesmerizing futuristic undertones, unlike the Vellfire’s more aggressive styling.
But that’s where the differences end. Both minivans are equally luxurious inside.
The top-of-the-line Executive Lounge grade of both minivans can comfortably seat six or a maximum of seven people. The best place to sit in the vehicle is in the second row, which has ultra-luxurious business jet-like captain seats.
Other ultra-luxury interior appointments include pull-down sunshades on all rear windows, a super-long overhead console that provides ambient lighting and some controls, footrests for second-row passengers, and a disappearing side step that increases accessibility.
The new generation Alphard and Vellfire also feature increased legroom while retaining the same exterior dimensions of the already spacious minivan. All these aim to give the 2024 Alphard and Vellfire a cozy interior atmosphere, but not quite as homey as the LG "Forever-Home" Minivan Concept.
The 2024 Toyota Alphard And Vellfire Have Modern High-Tech Safety And Comfort Features
Beyond the luxurious interior appointments, Toyota designed both the Alphard and the Vellfire to provide a comfortable and smooth ride for second and third-row passengers. The Japanese automaker claims it was able to reduce vibrations experienced in the back by around 30 percent compared to previous model years.
Toyota did this by equipping the car with a TNGA-specific MacPherson strut front suspension with a double wishbone rear suspension, and shock absorbers that adjust damping force based on the road surface. It also reduced vibrations by equipping rear seats with rubber bushings and memory foam that partially absorb vibrations from the road.
The Japanese automaker also equipped both minivans with low-noise tires and additional sound-absorbing material to minimize sound generated by wind and road.
On the safety side, the minivans come with the latest Toyota Safety Sense, which Toyota says is the most comprehensive safety and driving-support system on any Toyota minivan. It includes various functions like intra-lane steering assist and deceleration assist when turning at intersections on top of the standard Toyota Safety Sense functions.
The minivans are also equipped with Toyota Teammate, a feature present on premium Toyota and Lexus vehicles like the new luxurious 2022 Toyota Crown. Essentially, the system gives the minivans remote parking and hands-free advanced driving features.
