Real-Life Ferry Station From ‘Oliver Twist’ Is Now a Luxurious Home Outside London - Mansion Global

In chapter 21 of Charles Dickens’s novel “Oliver Twist,” he describes a scene: “As they passed Sunbury Church, the clock struck seven. There was a light in the ferry-house window opposite: which streamed across the road and threw into more sombre shadow a dark yew-tree with graves beneath it.”

That ferry house—a term that was used to describe a ferry station and usually an accompanying residence for the ferry operators—is now a waterfront family home abutting the River Thames, and it hit the market earlier this month for £2.25 million (US$2.86 million).

The building is nestled in the center of Sunbury, a pretty town on the northern banks of the famous river, some 15 miles south west of central London.

The home has panoramic river views.

“With its rich heritage, commanding riverside vistas and a private mooring, the Ferry House stands as a true masterpiece,” said Nick Wozniak, director of Dexters’s Sunbury office.

“For numerous years, this exceptionally distinctive property has held its place as a prominent landmark in the village. Today, it has undergone meticulous renovations, transforming into a waterside retreat,” he said.

The four-bedroom home spans 3,700 square feet and its hub is the open-plan reception, kitchen and dining room, complete with a loft vaulted ceiling and skylights. The space leads out onto a terrace with panoramic river views.

There’s a study that could be converted into a fifth bedroom and a garage. There’s also a vast, ground-level space that leads right out to the riverbank and dock, and could be transformed for a variety of uses, including an office or art studio, according to the listing.

Mansion Global couldn’t determine who is selling the home.
