“I have never been this vulnerable,” reveals actor Alex Wolff in our exclusive webcam interview (watch the video above) about his role on the acclaimed horror smash “Hereditary.” He adds, “The whole experience from start to finish was so many contradictory things at the same time. It was exhilarating, because I was getting an experience that nobody else has gotten to do, this is unbelievable, I feel so lucky, with also, this is miserable, this is so hard, I am breaking down.”
Of playing the character, he admits, “I felt raw, I felt like if someone touched me I would bleed. It was just that, the whole movie. It was a constant battle of this gasoline fire in me that was so exciting.” He admits that he “had this firey thing that was good but it was also really hard… it’s interesting, I have been talking about this movie for a while but this is stuff I have never really said.”

In “Hereditary,” Wolff plays 16 year-old Peter Graham, who is deeply troubled after the death of his grandmother and as the secrets and lies of her past begin to haunt him and his mother (Oscar nominee Toni Collette), father (Gabriel Byrne) and younger sister (Milly Shapiro). The film has been hailed for its performances and as a breakthrough for helmer Ari Aster, who created a deeply disturbing and confronting horror film, surpassing expectations by grossing over $79 million to be one of the most successful indie hits of the year.
As Wolff’s character Peter slowly unravels over the course of the film, we see a young man tortured and tormented by grief and fear until he breaks both physically and emotionally. It was an extremely challenging shoot for the actor, which so vividly comes across on screen and which has ultimately paid off in spades, as Wolff has received glowing reviews from critics and audiences for his authentic, raw and confronting performance.
“This movie is like watching someone lose their mind in real time and literally break. Just watching someone break, their sanity break,” Wolff explains. “It was so physical and so visceral and I had to be so unselfconscious,” he says. “I couldn’t act or fake this. I had to really go through hell.”
