Mythbusters' Jessi Combs Dies in Car Crash During Record Attempt - IGN - IGN

Mythbusters star Jessi Combs has died in a jet-powered vehicle crash. The crash, which allegedly was an attempt to break a land-speed record, occured in Oregon's Alvord Desert on Tuesday.The Hollywood Reporter states that the Harney County Sheriff's Office confirmed on Wednesday that Combs, who was a professional racer, passed away after a crash in a dry lake bed, though the exact cause of the accident is currently under investigation.

Combs' death was confirmed in a touching tribute on Instagram by close teammate Terry Madden, who wrote a heart-wrenching post about the racing star's final moments, saying he is "not ok" after losing "the most amazing spirit that I have ever or will ever know."

Her family also released a statement to confirm the 36-year-old's crash.

"Jessi's most notable dream was to become the fastest woman on Earth, a dream she had been chasing since 2012," they said, per Sky News. "Combs was one of the rare dreamers with the bravery to turn those possibilities into reality, and she left this earth driving faster than any other woman in history."

Days before the fatal accident, Combs posted on Instagram to briefly address the risks attached to her automotive record attempts.

"It may seem a little crazy to walk directly into the line of fire… those who are willing, are those who achieve great things… People say I'm crazy. I say thank you," she wrote in the caption.

According to Road and Track, Combs earned the title of "the fastest woman on four wheels" when she reached 398 mph (641km/h) in 2013, racing her jet-powered North American Eagle Supersonic Speed Challenger.

In addition to motorsports, Jessi hosted Mythbusters during its seventh season in 2009. She also appeared in several other auto shows, including Overhaulin', Xtreme 4x4, and All Girls Garage.

Discovery and Discovery Motor tweeted their condolences, saying, "The Discovery and MotorTrend Family is deeply saddened to learn of the tragic passing of Jessi Combs. She was a friend and colleague, an icon in the industry, and an undeniable force of nature who left an indelible mark on the car world. Our thoughts are with her family and loved ones."
