Do you have a dream that you want to turn into reality? It can seem like a huge leap to get from dreaming to doing, but with the right mindset and a focused attitude, you can do it. I know it can be done because I’ve done it and so have the people I’ve worked with.
How do you do it? You need three things to help you make the transition from dreaming to doing: a plan, a shift in mindset and a network.
Put Your Plan On Paper
There’s something very powerful about putting pen to paper and watching your plan unfold before your eyes. Writing out well-defined goals creates a foundation for achieving and repeating success.
I have always believed that when you have clearly defined goals for the future and plans for reaching these goals, you will achieve more than those who don’t plan. In fact, a recent survey mentioned in “What They Teach You at Harvard Business School: My Two Years Inside the Cauldron of Capitalism” found that college graduates who identified their career goals and wrote them down, earned ten times more than those who did not.
What goals do you have? Write those goals down. Next, write down the steps you need to take to achieve the goal. If you have several goals, I recommend writing one or two down to keep the process from becoming overwhelming. Setting incremental milestones gets you closer to reaching your goals and can also contributes to a better quality of life.
Be Your Own Cheerleader
Your inner dialogue is just as important for your success as goal setting. You are responsible for your thoughts. What you tell yourself will either support your goals or destroy them. To reach your goals, you must bathe your brain in positivity. You must choose constructive thoughts and refuse to allow negative thoughts to distract you from reaching your goals.
Many people feel more comfortable thinking badly about success. Why is this? Maybe it’s because you’re afraid to say you want to be successful because you don’t want others to laugh at you or accuse you of having lofty thoughts about yourself. Or, maybe you’re not sure what you want, so you push away the notion of creating success because you don’t know what that looks like for you.
These are normal thoughts, but let’s challenge them. Why are you self-sabotaging turning your dreams into reality?
Too often we spend time talking about what we don’t want or what we can’t have. Those thoughts point us in the wrong direction. A happy life is life that has direction. It’s a life that has meaning and something to work toward each day. We must feel our lives and our goals are meaningful for success.
Talks about Your Goals
Tell the people who support you about your dreams and plans for your life. Speaking your goals out loud to a supportive network puts things in motion. Yes, there will always be people who question your goals and your motivation. You can’t worry about those people. Instead seek out people who support you completely. Encouragement from people who want the best for you is rocket fuel for your goals. It boosts your confidence and helps you ignore the naysayers. Figure out who those people are and invite them into your network.
Discussing your goals with others also puts your intentions out into the universe. When we acknowledge what we want, written and verbally, we give power to our goals. They leave the “dream” state and get us closer to reality.
The Truth about Goals
The truth about goals is that sometimes you succeed and sometimes you fail. It doesn’t matter if your goal is to quit smoking, lose weight, train for a marathon or start a Fortune 500 company. Sometimes failing is the step right before succeeding.
Don’t be afraid of changing directions or re-examining your goals. When you face a challenge, rewrite your goals reflecting these challenges and what you need to do to overcome them. Seek support from your network and speak encouraging words to yourself.
