Mobile’s 2020 Mardi Gras parade season opened Friday night with the Conde Cavaliers rolling on Route A. See the accompanying gallery for photos of the revelry.
The parade came the day after the city lit up its official Mardi Gras tree for the first time. While they’re not the first of the year to roll in Lower Alabama -- Dauphin Island has had two parades already -- the Conde Cavaliers do traditionally kick off the season in downtown Mobile.
The Mobile Police Department estimated the crowd at 59,080. Police responded to 19 complaints; two adults were arrested on felony charges and two adults were arrested on misdemeanor charges. 117 parking tickets were issued and 20 vehicles were towed.
Next up on the schedule:
Saturday, Feb. 8 brings more action in downtown Mobile: The Bayport Parading Society and the Mystic DJ Riders roll at 2 p.m., followed by the Pharoahs and Conde Explorers roll at 6:30 p.m. Saturday on Route A. Elsewhere on Saturday, the Order of the Rolling River hits south Dauphin Island Parkway at 2 p.m. and Monroeville holds its Mardi Gras parade at 6:30 p.m. (Monroeville’s Whiz, Honk and Sputter antique vehicle parade takes place at 4 p.m.)
After that there’s a pause in the action until Thursday, Feb. 13, when the Order of Polka Dots are scheduled to tour downtown Mobile starting at 6:30 p.m.
