WACO, Texas (KWTX) A local Girl Scout troop made up of girls of all ages with special needs blew the lid off their annual cookie selling campaign.
"I am extremely proud," said troop leader Jennifer Cotton
Her daughter Ciara Holt, 20, who has cerebral palsy participated in the sales.
"Every single one of them offered something different. They try so hard so it’s so nice to see it pay off. "
The girls have been an organized troop for four years but this was the first year they set up booths across town to help with sales.
The girls spent Saturdays since mid-January at a booth they set up at locations including Sirona on Austin Avenue, the Brookshire's in Lorena and a Walmart in Waco.
"This year was our first year actually doing booths. In the past we didn't know if our girls could do it but I was like 'you know what we're going to try it' and they did awesome," she said.
The troop is made up of girls from 5 to 20 years of age with different disabilities and daily challenges.
Some are in wheelchairs, others have autism, and some struggle with seizures.
But nothing deterred the group from selling as many boxes of cookies as possible.
The troop’s goal was 4,000 boxes which was ambitious for a troop which only had nine girls at the time, but they not only met the goal, but also exceeded it by selling 4,369.
"This was the best year by far," Cotton said.
"This was the most that we ever sold. I think we're right up there with all the other troops who are much larger."
Cotton said the girls were brave and excited to work for their sales adding the community embraced them at every stop.
"Our girls pull them in," Cotton said.
“Even if someone was going to try and walk past and not stop when they say 'cookies' they got their attention. People stopped and talked to our girls and it was nice all being a part of the community."
Cotton says the girls generally get 50 cents per sold box of cookies for the troop, but because they did so well they're expected to get a quarter bonus per box sold.
The girls plan to use the money to go camping, a trip that Jennifer is already in the process of planning.
"I'm looking for a place now and making sure it can meet all the needs of all the girls," Jennifer said.
"They deserve it."
