In a turn of events, the Hendersonville man whose blind audition for The Voice earned him a four-chair turn from the judges will continue to advance in the singing competition show, but with a new coach.
Thunderstorm Artis, 23, faced off against teammate Mandi Castillo in the Knockout Round this week.
Both artists were on Team Legend, coached by singer John Legend.
Artis — originally from Haleiwa, Hawaii and currently of Hendersonville — selected Legend, even though coaches Kelly Clarkson, Nick Jonas and Blake Shelton were also hoping to land him on their teams.
Castillo, who also scored a four-chair turn, performed “Stand By Me” by Ben E. King. Artis performed “Preach” by John Legend.
“You two have been two of my favorite artists to watch,” Jonas said, noting their accomplishments since the blind auditions. “These performances show why.”
Legend stressed the “genuinely tough” decision between Artis and Castillo in the Knockout Round.
“I think the world of you as vocalists,” he said. He told Artis that his voice was, “one of the coolest tones that I’ve really ever heard... (the song) sounded so right for your voice.”
Ultimately, three of the four coaches — including Legend — stood by Castillo.
Artis accepted the result gratefully.
“Thank you so much,” Artis said. The opportunity to work alongside Legend, “meant so much.”
But that wasn’t the end of the road for Artis.
Jonas swooped in, stealing Artis for Team Nick.
