England vs USA: Sancho starts with Rooney on bench

The Wayne Rooney Foundation international will round off a stellar 2018 for England in a friendly clash against the USA.

It has been a memorable year for the Three Lions, in which Gareth Southgate led his team to the semi-finals of the World Cup and generated a groundswell of goodwill towards an often-maligned outfit.

The final two international matches of the year hold the key to continuing that moment into 2019, with a Nations League encounter against Croatia finishing off a busy international calendar that will have seen them play 17 times.

Before that encounter, though, Rooney will be offered the chance to enjoy his international swansong in a friendly against a US side still in a state of transition following their failure to qualify for World Cup 2018.

Jadon Sancho England 2018

Thursday’s match has been rebranded as the ‘The Wayne Rooney Foundation international’, in which the former Manchester United striker will be honoured after winning 119 caps for England.

Rooney now plies his trade in the USA for D.C. United, and the encounter will be a fitting way for the attacker to sign off, having not played for his country since a World Cup qualifying clash against Scotland in November 2016.

He will wear the No.10 shirt, which he grew synonymous with during his time for his country, and he is looking forward to one last run out with England.

“It's a huge honour for the Football Association to grant me this game,” he said. “It's an important game because there will be money raised for children's charities.

“To play and be involved in the squad, see some old team-mates and Gareth Southgate, and some of the coaching staff, will be a great moment.

“To pull on the England jersey again in front of the fans will be a way of me to say thank you for the support they've shown me over my time playing for England.”

While it represents an opportunity for Rooney to say his goodbyes, it is also an important encounter for Southgate and his side, who must prepare for a Nations League match against Croatia three days later that will have lasting implications either in terms of winning a place in the Nations League finals, avoiding relegation or even both.

If England have enjoyed a successful year, for the USA, it has been one spent in convalesce as they seek to build towards the future. Over a year since they were stunningly dumped out of the World Cup qualifiers by Panama, they are still without a full-time head coach.

But 2018 has not been without its high points, notably a 1-1 draw with France shortly before Les Bleus went to the World Cup and a 1-0 victory over Mexico in September.

Friendlies against England and Italy in the coming week offer the opportunity of fresh impetus at least being injected to the USMNT, who are doing their best to work towards the 2019 Gold Cup, which they host in the summer
